Energy drives our modern world - we need sustainable low cost solutions

The bags of coals, expected to go on sale later this year in petrol station forecourts and homeware stores, are just the latest product from Bio-bean, a young London-based company which produces biofuels from coffee grounds.
The coals are produced at a 20,000 sq ft production plant in Cambridgeshire that takes in tonnes of waste coffee from the UK’s cafes and factories.
The fuels produced are the culmination of an idea by Bio-bean founder Arthur Kay. While studying architecture at university he became interested in circular economies, where resources are kept in use for as long as possible.

Some Good News ! - 5th June 2015 - Today Norway’s parliament voted to sell its country’s pension fund shares in companies that mine and burn coal. That’s the largest divestment ever, with a staggering $8.8bn being moved out of the dirtiest fossil fuel industry. Follow the campaign for divestment at goFossilFree.org
Fossil Fuel Companies are benefiting from global subsidies of $5,300bn a year, equivalent to $10m a minute every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund.
The IMF calls the revelation “shocking” and says the figure is an “extremely robust” estimate of the true cost of fossil fuels. The $5,300bn subsidy estimated for 2015 is greater than the total health spending of all the world’s governments. By comparison, subsidies for renewables at $120bn are almost trivial. Battery Backup for Home Energy - new system from TESLA based on lithium ion technology will store solar, wind energy etc
Friends of the Earth's renewable energy campaigner Alasdair Cameron said having solar panels and a home battery in the future could become as common as central heating. "Just as the internet changed the way we use information so renewable sources, like wind and solar, are changing the way we make and use energy - and electricity storage is an important part of that change," he said. Renewables provided 15% of the EU's energy in 2013, according to new data published in March 2015 by Eurostat, the EU's official statistical body.
The figures show the EU is on track to meet its 20% renewables target in 2020. Transport and heat are lagging behind progress in electricity, where wind and solar remain relatively small contributors. The figures also show that the UK is further behind its 2020 renewable energy target than all other member states. |
Solar Power - How is the UK doing?
We need to find an alternative to non-renewable fossil fuels. They contribute to global warming, will become increasingly expensive as supplies dwindle, and make us dependent on outside suppliers - not a good policy in our volatile world . See how the UK is doing on the charts below. ![]() Member states' gaps between their renewable energy shares in 2013 and their targets for 2020. Sweden (SE) has exceeded its target. The UK is furthest behind, closely followed by the Netherlands (NE). (UK target is 15%, already below the average European target of 20%.) Source: Eurostat. Chart by Carbon Brief.
